Founded in 2010, the Freshman Leadership Academy was created to exposes first year students at Howard University to the duties, responsibilities, opportunities, and challenges associated with all aspects of leadership. From participating in character-building workshops to initiating service projects and campus events, students are charged with approaching the concept and implementation of leadership in a holistic manner.

FLA consists of four components:

FLA emphasizes global leadership and international cultural exchange. One goal of the Freshman Leadership Academy is to prepare and encourage students to pursue international opportunities, such
as scholarships, fellowships, and study abroad programs.
Since its inception, FLA has been one of the leading incubators for student leadership and academic excellence on Howard University’s campus.
